The last time we were here, at Open Arms Childcare Ministries in La Mision (Mexico), the subject at the meeting of all the moms was social enterprise...or "a business or service with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners”. In other words, teach people to sustain themselves in creative ways to provide for their families while keeping that family in tact. This was something I(Lindzee) had already been meditating on, so it was such a blessing to be able to spend time chatting with someone who had already orchestrated a thriving program.
Since the last time we came, the moms and some of the kids at the daycare have made various items (like scarves, hats, towels, napkins and headbands) to seel to bring profit to their family without having to sacrifice the wellfare of their children to do so. I AM INSPIRED!!
In the near future NPI will be implementing classes/meetings with the mothers in the neighborhoods we serve in order to start a social enterprise to benefit the areas we work in, in North Visalia and possibly another location in Mexico (Canyon de Sainz, the location we travel to for Spring Break)! We will be teaching the ladies we serve to create with their hands things that can be sold with the profit going directly to their families. This promotes the idea that we can provide for ourselves using the tools God has gifted us with, thus restoring a sense of self worth & respect!
Let's be honest, most of the population sees the problem areas of our city/cities and says, "Why don't those people get a job!" THIS IS THE SOLUTION!! We will teach them a way to start providing for their families without ever leaving home!
WE WILL NEED:
TEACHERS: in different areas, maybe you (or someone you know) knits, sews, makes jewelry or another "trade" that can be taught
SUPPLIES: yarn, "cheater" looms, scrap fabric, thread, beads, clasps etc...
PRAYER: Many of these women have not realized that they are capable of creating things that other people would value. Most beleive that they don't have much to offer and have no talens/skills. Please pray that they will realize their potential on Christ and that God has a specific plan & purpose for their life!
